DESCRIPTION:Area’s First “Trombone Christmas” Features 42 Virginia Musicians\n42 Trombonists from across Virginia are meeting up to play a concert of holiday favorites next Saturday\, December 21 at Harrisonburg’s Valley Mall beginning at 1:30 p.m. The one-hour concert will take place in front of Santa Claus Village inside the mall near JC Penney. This free event will help raise awareness of (and donations for) CASA for Children of the Blue Ridge. \nTrombone Christmas organizer\, Robert Mott of Mr. Jefferson’s Bones\, got the idea from the Los Angeles-based Bones West: an organization of professional trombonists and “weekend warriors” that has been performing holiday concerts like this since the late 1980s in Southern California. Over the years\, Bones West collected their arrangements — some of which were penned by Count Basie’s long-time arranger\, Sammy Nestico — into a music book and has helped to “franchise” the experience to interested trombone groups across the U.S. \nIn 2019\, Trombone Christmases will be performed in Philadelphia; Denver; Kansas City; Charlotte; Hillsboro\, Oregon and Middletown\, Connecticut. This year marks the first Trombone Christmas in Virginia. \n

SUMMARY:The Charlottesville Celebration of Resonance and Harmony
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Jefferson’s Bones — together with over 25 fellow professional trombonists from Charlottesville\, Richmond\, Lynchburg and the New River Valley\, including members of the Trombonistas por Puerto Rico — will perform a 90-minute concert for peace and unity in Charlottesville’s Market Street Park (site of the 2017 protest march). A vision of Robert Graham\, a former founding member of Mr. Jefferson’s Bones\, the concert hopes to change the resonance around the controversial statue of confederate general\, Robert E. Lee. This is a free event co-sponsored by First United Methodist Church (which will serve as the rain location) and the City of Charlottesville and the public is invited. \nPARKING: The streets surrounding the Market Street Park will be closed to traffic for the weekend (except for Market Street)\, so parking is suggested at either the Market Street or Water Street Parking Garages\, both adjacent to the Charlottesville downtown mall. Paid parking may be available at the Omni Hotel at the west end of the downtown mall. Both garages will offer free public parking all weekend and may fill up earlier than normal. Allow 10 minutes to walk from the garage to the park. Bring your own blanket or lawn chairs as there is no seating in the park.
